This week is operation safe driver week conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA). CVSA – in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), law enforcement and the motor carrier industry – launched the Operation Safe Driver Program in 2007 to reduce the number of deaths and injuries resulting from unsafe driving behaviors.
Before you hit the road, every truck driver must know the following.
1. What is Operation Safe Driver Week?
Operation Safe Driver Week is a "weeklong safety initiative aiming to call attention to driver behaviors, the main cause of crashes, and combat those behaviors through heightened traffic safety enforcement and education."
2. How Truck Drivers Will be Impacted
Heightened law enforcement will be prominent. They will be using education aimed at combating unsafe driving behaviors by both commercial motor vehicle and passenger-vehicle drivers.
3. What Law Enforcement Agencies are Observing
Law enforcement officers are on the lookout for unsafe driver behaviors. Examples are:
- Speeding
- Failure to use a seatbelt
- Distracted driving
- Failure to obey traffic control devices
- Improper lane change
- Etc.
