You cannot go a week without a news article with the latest information on self-driving trucks. Autonomous semi-trucks are becoming more of a reality, expecially as Paypal, SpaceX and Tesla founder, Elon Musk is unveiling its Tesla Semi Truck in a few days.

What excatly does this mean to the professional truck driver?

Yes. There is a professional truck driver shortage.
No. Professional truck drivers are not going to quickly be a profession of the past. However, the driver's job responsibilities may change in years to come. 

Safety Reigns Supreme
Until autonomous semi trucks are proven safe, there will continue to be a person controlling the cargo.

 

Are all professional truck drivers going to be without a job in the next five years? That is highly unlikely. Like other professions, truck drivers will more than likely require new, technical skills.
